Ode to Overly Sentimental Self via Glory

One of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite films. I'm not into war or movies about war. I'm not all that into religion either. I am however into deep, soulful group humming, clapping and chanting with humility, appreciation, and fearless conviction in the face of oppression.

Root Blend Tracing

We are 99.9% genetically identical. Why then does my personal ancestry still intrigue me?

Mother was born and raised in Colombia. Great grandma was 'Mestiza' (mostly Spaniard) who married a Ukrainian Jew, refugee of the Bolshevik Revolution. She was among South America's first converts to Judaism. Their daughter (my Grandma), married a Polish Jew, WWII refugee.

Since most East European Jews seem to descend from ancient Khazaria, my maternal roots allude to that region, in combination with that pre-columbian and conquistador concoction. if only more indigenous andeans and african ex-slaves had contributed to my lineage, i'd then be as 100% Colombian as coffee.

Father was born and raised in Israel. His parents were Romanian Jews who took refuge in Palestine. their roots prior to Romania is unclear.

Shoestring Traveling

There are ways to see the world without it costing you, locals, or the environment an arm and a leg. Hitchhiking and couch-surfing are viable forms of sustainable transportation and informal, somewhat scattered, yet highly insightful forms of education. carpooling with strangers. friends you have not met yet.

Hitchhiking appears to be the polar opposite, or inverse, of taxi driving. below are pictures from France, California, Peru, and Alaska. I have also hitched through 44 other US states and chunks of Equador, Catalunya, and Deutschland.

Cartography as Art

Aside from bicycles, maps are probably the single most important physical manifestation of my existence. Maps can be an obsession, but not a possession. They truly only belong to anyone who needs them at any given moment. Regardless, I do have a perpetually growing collection of maps, and I absolutely love making my own maps out of every available medium.

Ideally, a map of the randomly unfolding route of every taxi shift can be realized, color-coded and collage-worked, with text and images relating to the passengers and panoramas experienced throughout that particular twelve hour voyage.

Mapmaking may occur as a form of journaling about any daily string of occurrences. It can be as artistically expressive as it is statistically informative.
